Twitter crackles over U.S. Senate race in N.J.

Twitter crackles over U.S. Senate race in N.J.

Celebrities tweeted regularly about Newark Mayor Cory Booker night before Senate primary.

The mayor known for making Twitter a near extension of his office was being mentioned all over the Twitterverse Monday night, hours before New Jersey voters were to decide whether to make him the Democratic candidate in the New Jersey race for U.S. Senate.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker may not have become a trending topic on Twitter, but celebrities and well-knowns were tweeting their support for him left and right Monday night, just before Tuesday's special-election Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death in June of Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg.
Actress Eva Longoria, who campaigned with Booker on Monday night, tweeted , "Less than 24 hours to go! Have you pledged to vote for @CoryBooker yet? Let us know we have your support." Booker retweeted Longoria's tweet.
Longoria also tweeted, "Having fun with @CoryBooker in New Jersey! Don't forget to vote tomorrow, August 13th!"
Ivanka Trump, daughter of mogul Donald Trump, tweeted, "Be sure to vote for @CoryBooker in #NJSen primary election this Tues 8/13!"
Actress LaLa Anthony tweeted, "Help get great #NJ leader elected to the Senate — vote @CoryBooker this Tues 8/13!"
Entertainment businessman Russell Simmons tweeted, "Vote for @CoryBooker for Senate this Tues 8/13! Help get out the vote."
Booker faces Reps. Frank Pallone and Rush Holt and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver in the primary. The Republicans competing in the primary are former Bogota, N.J., mayor Steve Lonegan, and Franklin Township, N.J., physician Alieta Eck, among others. A special election for the seat will take place Oct. 16. The state has not sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate for 41 years.
Booker has become known as being quite adept and vocal on Twitter, engaging with supporters about everything from crises around New Jersey's most populous city to his workouts on the treadmill to the Super Bowl. He has 1.4 million followers and has pushed out more than 30,000 tweets. On Monday, he was tweeting at a rate of several per hour.
Booker did not respond to a tweet requesting comment.
