Should mobile phones be banned in cars?

Should mobile phones be banned in cars?

We all know that mobile phone that mobile phones are a distraction in cars. It is annoying and frightening to see people taking on their hand-held mobile phones while driving, especially, when their behavior creates a hazardous situation for everyone on the road. However, banning mobile phones use in cars is like stuffing a Genie into the bottle. There are certain obvious cases were mobile phone use truly should be banned, such as teenage drivers and bus drivers but there are a lot of people who depend on communicating while driving.

Below we show the results of two recent studies:

AAA study

This study showed the rank of distraction and gave the distraction level a score from 1.0 to 5.0. Here are the results:
No distractions
1.00
            Radio on
1.21
            Audio book
1.75
            Hands-free mobile phone
2.27 (talking only, not looking at the mobile phone)
            Talking to passenger
2.33 (passenger unaware of surroundings)
            Hand-held mobile phone
2.45
            Speech to text
3.06
            Operational span task
5.00 (solving a math problem while trying to remember a fact)

Virginia Tech & NHTSA study

This study found that the risk of an accident depended on the specific task associated with mobile phones. Here are the results:
                               Task
         Risk  Range (with 95% confidence)
             Hand held mobile phone use
                           1.20-2.49
     Portable Hands-free mobile phone use
                           0.49-2.30
   Integrated Hands-free mobile phone use
                           0.25-1.31
              Visual and manual subtask
                           1.91-4.51

Putting things in perspective, accident risk depends on a number of other factors:
  • ·         Speed

                     Driving (MPH)
                              Risk
                               1
                              5%
                               10
                              1.62%
                               20
                              2.65%

  • ·         Choice of roads

There is a huge variation in accident risk depending on the choice of road. The accident rate on a complex urban arterial road is about 10 times higher than a motorway.
  • ·         Age

Drivers under 25 years old are at 3x risk of having an accident. Old age is not a big problem until the driver gets quite old around 70 years old.
  • ·         Gender

Men get in more fatal accidents. Women get in slightly more fender benders.
  • ·         Alcohol

In California State, a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 is the legal limit but any amount of alcohol is dangerous. A legal drunk driver, about two drinks for most people, is about equal to teenage driver.

     Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
                     Relative Risk
                            0.00
                             1.0
                            0.05
                             1.8
                            0.08
                             3.2
                            0.12
                             7.1
                            0.21
                           30.5
  • ·         More factors

  •              All drivers think they are better drivers than they                        really are.
  •              Some drivers have mental deficits anger issues that                     make them far more dangerous than the rest of                           population.
  •               Citations for moving violations predict how likely                     you will be to get in an accident.

These studies are ones of many that show that any form of talking puts a cognitive load on the brain and causes a degree of distraction. Also, anything that puts a load on the brain also tends to narrow our peripheral vision. That is, we literally see less when we are distracted. Without a doubt, handheld mobile phone use, any task involves touching the mobile phone, talking to passenger in the front seat and taking your eyes off the road will increase your risk of an accident.

These studies show that driver judgement is a big factor but even with typical drive judgement, visual and manual task will cause more accidents. Until we have self-driving cars, it is reasonable to ban the worst offenders: handheld mobile and texting.

Here is what we know:

                    Pros                    vs                       Cons
  • ·         Talking with

Hands free mobile
Hand held mobile
Better for driving
Worst for driving
It is not illegal/It is not easy to enforce
It is easy to enforce/That should be banned
It is not risk-free, Risk Range : 0.25-2.30
Highest risk of accident, Risk Range : 1.20-2.49
It is not as safe as driving without distractions
It is totally unsafe

  • ·         Texting

Speech to text is dangerous
Touching to text is dangerous
Worse that driving drunk
The worst of all
That should be banned (speech to text, score: 3.06 distraction level, where MIN is 1.0 & MAX is 5.0)
That should be banned (visual and manual subtask, Risk Range: 1.91-4.51)

  • ·         Trying to find your mobile

No problem at all
Dangerous, but if the driver uses good judgement, then it is a limited hazardous

When you look at the risk and the carnage on the roads, it is questionable whether humans should be driving cars at all.

Talking on mobile is about the same cognitive load                    as talking to someone/passenger in the front seat.

Should talking to a passenger be banned? , yet                          nobody is suggesting banning passengers from                          talking to driver.

Listening to Audio-book is less cognitive load as a                    conversation or talking but the driver might be                          listening to the Audio-book close to 100% of the time.

Should Audio-books be banned from cars?

A teenage driver is about the same risk as a legally drunk         driver. Yet, a teenage driver has to actually drive in order         to learn how or know-how.

Should teenage driver and/or drunk driver be banned                from cars?

T-Mobile CEO John Legere resolves to 'Transform' wireless in 2014.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere resolves to 'Transform' wireless in 2014

MobileNews by Stephanie Mlot

T-Mobile CEO John Legere resolves to 'Transform' wireless in 2014
Rarely do people accomplish all of their New Year's resolutions. But most people aren't T-Mobile CEO John Legere, who on New Year's Day tweeted a photo of his completed 2013 pledges, alongside a number of resolutions for the new year.
Legere, who met his goal to "shake up the wireless industry" last year, is hoping to continue his reign by "transforming the wireless industry" in 2014.
"Let the transformation begin!" he wrote in a 1 January tweet, highlighting his ideas about customer service, 4G LTE, snagging new users, CES 2014, and giving AT&T a break — "or not."
The "un-carrier" made waves last year when it ditched traditional wireless contracts. Then, over the summer, the company also unveiled its "Jump" trade-in program, allowing for early device upgrades every six months. As of early November, the carrier garnered more than 2.2 million Jump enrollments, ending the quarter with a total 45 million users and $6.69 billion (£4 billion) in revenue.
But Legere didn't stop there. This Autumn, T-Mobile announced that it would provide all users with 200MB of free 4G LTE data each month with the purchase of a new tablet.
But now that the ball has dropped and the calendar year has started over, the CEO has more new ideas. His to-do list (pictured above) includes some lofty goals:
"Continue to remove customer pain points""4G LTE — go faster, go LOUD""Unshackle the family from those other guys""Make waves at CES 2014""Give AT&T a break ... or not"
Though Legere seems confident that his company will roll into 2015 with checkmarks next to each of those ideas, he doesn't reveal exactly how he plans to execute any of them.

Legere's list does not mention the rumours about Sprint buying T-Mobile. A late 2013 report suggested that the two companies would merge at some point this year, but nothing has been announced.  T-Mobile did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Top apps for your new Android smartphone

Loie Favre (translation)
3
Did you just open a present this holiday season to discover a brand-spanking new Android smartphone? If you did, well you’re a lucky duck and now it’s time to start having some fun with all the amazing Android apps that are available in the Google Play Store. A fair warning though, many are a waste of time, so here are the ones that all new AND continuing Android users should install.

Finding and managing files: ES File Explorer File Manager

Depending on the brand of shiny new toy which you pulled out of the tissue paper, you may or may not have a file explorer, but this is something indispensable for Android users and the app for this purpose which may have been pre-installed on your device may not suffice. To start, we highly recommend getting ES File Explorer File Manager which is really intuitive and easy to use and is available in a variety of languages.

Music player for heavy and heavy listeners alike: Poweramp

Here’s an Android multimedia player whose functions will make your head spin. Whether you always have earphones glued to your ears or you just want to listen to music on your phone once in a while, there’s a huge chance that Poweramp could be made for you. It’s easy to use, filled to the rafters with functions, supports a huge number of file types, has different skins, an equalizer….need I say more?

Poweramp is available for a free trial for 15 days and afterwards you’ll have to pay. If you want to try a free app that does the same thing, check out Winamp, which is equally as stable and has a simple user interface.

Watching videos: VLC

You might have heard about VLC Plus Pro thanks to its PC version. Even though this version isn’t yet 100% complete, we consider it to be a super useful app and one of the most effective for movie watching on your Android tablet or smartphone. The application allows you to add subtitles, it will adopt to your screen size and to top it all off, it is extremely user-friendly. Nonetheless, the app, as it is still in its beginning stages, can sometimes be a little buggy. If you don’t feel like testing a new up-and-coming app, then try MX Player.

Saving your files with a backup app: Helium

Though I’m sure you could survive without this next app, we strongly advise using it. It will allow you to save your apps, data, SMS, contacts and pictures in the occasion of theft, loss or other unfortunate circumstances. Backed up apps will also be retained in the occasion of sending your smartphone back to be repaired by the manufacturer, during which case it comes back a clean slate, all data lost. With Helium, it’s easy! Simply check the apps that you would like to save and choose backup.

Taking notes: Any.Do To do list

Smartphones are one of the rare things that you carry along with you at all time and comes in handy for quickly ‘jotting down’ notes or thoughts throughout the day. Any.Do is a well-rounded app: it organizes for you, while helping you out. I you choose the word ‘grocery’, Any.Do will suggest a sentence like ‘go grocery shopping’ or ‘go grocery shopping for...’’ and all you have to do is click on the contact icon to add the name of the person. This is just one of the great examples of how Any.Do can be useful in your every day life. If you get hooked on this app, you’ll never let it go.

Keeping up with the Joneses: Facebook, Twitter, Skype and Instagram

Here we’ve grouped all of the most popular social networking apps. These are obviously all available for Android and are often updated. Facebook and Twitter also have widgets that allow you to be ‘in the know’ with your friends in a more in your face kind of way. Instagram has also integrated video to make some cool short snippets. Skype allows you to place calls via mobile data or Wi-Fi. But just for your information, these aren’t the end all and be all of social media apps, there are more coming into the limelight, like Viber, Vine, Cinemagram, Line, Wechat…

Getting in touch: WhatsApp

If you don’t know WhatsApp, then you have probably just acquired your first smartphone! This app has become the bread and butter for iOS and Android users worldwide. With instant messaging, photo transfers, sounds, groupe conversations, most are using it on a daily basis and as a replacement for the common SMS or text message. Though it’s not the only app of its genre (nor is it the best), you are sure with WhatsApp that you will be able to keep in contact with most of your friends and family.

Great all-around game: Clash of Clans

Clash of Clans is an excellent mobile game. It combines strategy, action and management and what’s more, it’s multiplayer. Its success is probably in large part due to its easy usage and the lack of ads. Not only that, you don’t need to be constantly connected and need not fear having to dish out tons of cash in order to actually progress: Clash of Clans has multiple platforms and has more than a million players around the globe. You develop your own village and join or create clans to become the lord of your guilde.

Working with documents: Quickoffice

If you want to open documents, edit them as well as view spreadsheets, give Quickoffice for Android a try, it’s sort of like Microsoft Office for PC. You are able to use your smartphone, or better yet a tablet, to rework your docs, slide presentations or graphs. Obviously, working with office docs on your computer is a lot more ergonomic, however if you buy yourself an attachable Bluetooth keyboard for Android, it’s almost like you are sitting at your good old desktop again.

Evidently, you can’t forget about installing AndroidPIT to keep on top of all your Android, smartphone, tablet and app news, as well as take part in the forum and discover lots of new stuff to do with your device.
What other applications have you installed with your new smartphone?
