The 12 myths of Christmas

Norman Wells guides us through the tinsel to the truth

Cribs, carols, cards, nativity plays and films — they all have something to say about the birth of Christ just over 2,000 years ago.

But sometimes the message they present is quite different from what really happened. Here we look at some of the most common myths and compare them with what the Bible tells us about Jesus’s birth.
Myth 1: Jesus was born on December 25.
The Truth: No one knows the date on which Jesus was born and there is no record of any date being set apart to mark his birth during the first 300 years of the history of the church. It was not until the 4th century that Christians started to celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25 in an attempt to Christianise the pagan celebration of the birthday of the sun.
Myth 2: Jesus was born in a stable, surrounded by cattle.
The Truth: The fact that Jesus was laid in a manger — an animal’s feeding trough — has led many to assume that he must have been born in a stable in the midst of cattle. However, the Bible does not specifically mention a stable and it certainly doesn’t refer to the presence of animals. The precise setting in which Jesus was born and spent his earliest hours and days is not described. However, the fact that we are told ‘there was no room for them in the inn’ tells us that he was born in poverty and that his uniqueness was not recognised by those around him.
Myth 3: Three Eastern kings followed a star to Jesus’s birthplace.
The Truth: The visitors from the East are nowhere described as kings in the Bible and, although it is probably fair to assume that they were men of some standing, their precise social status is unknown. The tradition that there were three Magi or ‘wise men’ is based on the fact that they presented three gifts to Jesus — gold, frankincense and myrrh — but the Bible does not tell us how many men were in their party.
Myth 4: The shepherds and the wise men saw the infant Jesus at the same time.
The Truth: There is no basis in the Bible for the traditional nativity scene showing the shepherds and wise men visiting the newborn Christ at the same time. While the shepherds heard the news on the very night of Jesus’s birth and immediately made their way to the manger, it would appear that the wise men reached Bethlehem several months later.
Myth 5: Jesus never cried as a baby.
The Truth: As the sinless Son of God, the baby Jesus would never have been guilty of selfish or angry crying, but there is no reason to imagine that he would never have cried to communicate his need of food or comfort. The Bible tells us that Jesus was a real baby, who had a real childhood and grew up into a real man. He suffered hunger, thirst and exhaustion, and experienced joy and sorrow just like we all do, but in his case it was always without sin.
Myth 6: Christmas Day is the most holy day of the year for Christians.
The Truth: From the beginning, God has set apart one day each week as a ‘holy day’. However, apart from the requirement to treat Sunday as a special day for worship and rest from our usual activities, the Bible does not command Christians to regard any other day as a ‘holy day’.
Myth 7: It was by chance that Jesus was born in Bethlehem because Mary and Joseph just happened to be staying there at the time.
The Truth: The location of Jesus’s birth was far from accidental. Some 700 years before his birth, the prophet Micah had declared that the promised Christ would be born in the insignificant town of Bethlehem.

Myth 8: Jesus was born at midnight.

The Truth: The Christmas carol, ‘It came upon a midnight clear’, and the custom of some churches to hold midnight services on Christmas Eve have prompted some people to imagine that Jesus was born on the stroke of midnight. However, the Bible does not tell us the precise hour at which Jesus was born. Myth 9: Jesus was the only child Mary ever had.
The Truth: Although Jesus was the only child Mary had as a result of a direct work of the Holy Spirit without the involvement of a human father, there is no basis for suggesting that she and Joseph did not have further children by natural means. In fact, the Bible makes several references to Jesus’s brothers, indicating that he grew up surrounded by siblings in a family headed by a couple with a normal marriage.
Myth 10: Jesus’s birth marked the beginning of his impact on the world.
The Truth: Although Jesus’s birth in Bethlehem marked the beginning of the period in which God lived on earth in human flesh, it did not mark the beginning of his existence. The Bible tells us that the Son of God had no beginning — he has always existed. In fact, the entire universe was made through him, and nothing was made without him. He therefore had an immense impact on the world long before he was born as a human baby.
Myth 11: The main purpose of Jesus coming into the world was to set us a good example.
The Truth: Although Jesus certainly does present an example to us of obedience, love to God, love for others, mercy, compassion, suffering, sacrifice and much more, that was not the primary reason for which he came into the world. The main reason for which the Son of God became man was in order to die on the cross to save us from our sins. The Bible says: ‘This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’.
Myth 12: The biblical account of the birth of Jesus is a lovely story for children at this time of year, but it doesn’t make any difference to me.
The Truth: The birth of Jesus makes a profound difference to all of us, whether young or old. Without Jesus, we are cut off from God and none of us is good enough to make it to heaven on our own. The Bible says that Jesus Christ is only person who can bring us to God, because he is both God and man. He knows what it is like to be human, and he also has the divine power that is needed to bring us back to God.
If Jesus had never been born as a baby in Bethlehem, there would be no hope for any of us. But as a result of his birth, and through his subsequent death and resurrection, he has opened up for us a way back to God. Jesus himself said: ‘I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness’ (John 12.46).

En muchas de nuestras iglesias, no se predica acerca de la caridad o la generosidad hacia el pobre y necesitado. Y en otras cuando sí se predica, solo se queda en palabras y no en hechos. El siguiente artículo nos hace reflexionar acerca de lo bello que es ser misericordioso y ser un instrumento de bendición para una persona necesitada.

 

No se suele predicar mucho acerca de la compasión con el pobre y necesitado, y de la limosna, como si no fuera algo cristiano. Es una lástima porque esa es una de las enseñanzas básicas tanto del Antiguo como del Nuevo Testamento, cuyo cumplimiento trae mucha bendición. Pero yo te digo, amigo lector: Abre tus manos y tu puerta con generosidad al pobre y necesitado y verás cómo Dios te recompensa abundantemente.

Quien quiera convencerse de que no exagero lea el Salmo 112: «El hombre de bien tiene misericordia y presta… Reparte, da a los pobres; su justicia permanece para siempre» (5a,9). Proverbios también nos reprende: «No te niegues a hacer el bien a quien es debido, cuando tienes poder para hacerlo. No digas a tu prójimo: Anda y vuelve, y mañana te daré, cuando tienes contigo qué darle» (3.27,28). Y también: «El que da a los pobres presta a Dios» (19.17) ¡Qué privilegio! Deberíamos darle gracias al mendigo que nos extiende la mano por el favor que nos hace, antes de darle una moneda.

Jesús exalta la misericordia en las bienaventuranzas (Mt 5.7 «Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia»). También las epístolas generales repiten ese mensaje: «Porque juicio sin misericordia se hará con aquel que no hiciere misericordia; y la misericordia triunfa sobre el juicio… Hermanos míos. Y si un hermano o una hermana están desnudos, y tienen necesidad del mantenimiento de cada día, y alguno de vosotros les dice: Id en paz, calentaos y sacios, pero no le dais las cosas que son necesarias para el cuerpo, ¿de qué aprovecha» (Stg 2.13,15,16).

«Pero el que tiene bienes de este mundo y ve a su hermano tener necesidad, y cierra contra él su corazón, ¿cómo mora el amor de Dios en él? Hijitos míos, no amemos de palabra ni de lengua, sino de hecho y en verdad» (1 Jn 3.17,18).

El ángel que se aparece a Cornelio le dice que la razón por la cual él lo visita es porque «tus oraciones y tus limosnas han subido para memoria delante de Dios» (Hch 10.5). Cornelio halló gracia ante los ojos de Dios no sólo por sus oraciones sino también por su generosidad con el pueblo (10.2). Pablo dedica dos capítulos de su segunda carta a los Corintios a ese tema que —como he escrito antes en otro lugar— no se refieren al diezmo sino a la colecta que él hacía para los pobres de Jerusalén, como bien indica el título de ese pasaje en la Reina-Valera 60.

No se suele predicar mucho acerca de esto en parte debido a que tradicionalmente en las iglesias el énfasis de la generosidad está puesto en el diezmo. Pero también porque, debido a la dureza de nuestros corazones, no nos gusta que se metan con nuestro bolsillo. Bastante es ya, decimos, que contribuyamos al sostenimiento de nuestra iglesia.

Hay muchos que no prosperan pese a que diezman fielmente. ¿No será porque han cerrado su corazón y su mano al pobre? Recuérdese que Jesús mantenía una bolsa para dar limosnas. Así como él recibía, él daba: «Más bienaventurado es dar que recibir» (Hch 20.25). ¿Qué esperas para empezar a sembrar tu recompensa? Pero si lo haces por interés y no por amor, mejor será que te abstengas, porque no puedes sobornar a Dios.

Como ves todo lo que debe hacer es permanecer, es estar en Jesús, y Dios te limpiará, para que lleves mas fruto. Alvaro tu ya estas limpio por la palabra que Jesús te habló. Así que Jesús te recuerda en Juan 15:7: Si estuviereis en mi, y mis palabras estuvieren en vosotros, pedid (pedid con fe, confiando en Dios), pedid todo lo que queréis, y será hecho para ti,

Así que hermano te pongo estas mismos versículos en Ingles para que aprendas a conocer la palabra de Dios en Ingles, esta escrita con palabras similares, pero en si la traducción significa lo mismo.

Famous Last Words: Stir It Up

Where I come from in South London, many people's response to the phrase "stir it up" is to sing the Bob Marley song of the same name. It's a song about sexual arousal. But when the Paul says "stir it up" he's talking about spiritual arousal.

"Stir up the gift of God that is within you." Most of the time, most of us are not in a state of spiritual arousal - until something happens, a word said, a person is seen, a memory is evoked.

Then our senses are heightened, our heart is emboldened, we're avid for more, we give our attention, we see things we were asleep to. The scripture calls us to stir ourselves, to become alert to the spiritual realm, to extend our spiritual antennae so we seek out and tune into God's thoughts. We need to live in the midst of prayer so we hear God's prompts, and see God's activity. This doesn'y just happen. We need actively to get ourselves in the mood, through Bible reading, conversation, worship, prayer.

Stir it up! Or as another Bob Dylan sang: "When you gonna wake up?"

Lord, help me to make time, space and energy to be spiritually aroused. Help me to be alert to your Spirit at work. Help me hear your voice and feel your heart. Help me stir up the gift you have put within me. Amen.

La Bibbia rappresenta così la sola fonte da cui trarre ispirazione, ad essa sola ci si rivolge per conoscere la volontà di Dio ed i doveri cristiani.

Siamo Pentecostali
Un termine che ci riporta all’esperienza della Pentecoste, narrata in Atti, capitolo 2, quando i primi cristiani ricevettero il battesimo nello Spirito Santo con il segno del parlare in altre lingue, una pienezza promessa ad ogni credente nato di nuovo.

Il Signore Gesù Cristo
Crediamo che il Signore Gesù fu concepito dallo Spirito Santo ed assunse la natura umana in seno di Maria vergine e che Egli è vero Dio e vero Uomo (Giovanni 1:1, 2, 14; Luca 1:34, 35; Matteo 1:23).

La divinità del Signore Gesù
Crediamo nella Sua vita senza peccato, nei suoi miracoli, nella sua morte vicaria, come 'prezzo di riscatto' per tutti gli uomini, nella sua risurrezione, nella sua ascensione alla destra del Padre, quale unico mediatore, nel Suo personale ed imminente ritorno per i redenti e poi sulla terra in potenza e gloria per stabilire il Suo regno (I Pietro 2:22; II Corinzi 5:21; Atti 2:22; I Pietro 3:18; I Timoteo 2:5, 6; Romani 1:4; 2:24; I Corinzi 15:4; Atti 1:9-11; Giovanni 14:1-3; I Corinzi 15:25).

Gli Angeli
Crediamo all'esistenza degli angeli crati tutti puri e che una parte di questi, caduti in una corruzione e perdizione irreparabili, per diretta azione di Satana, angelo ribelle, saranno con lui eternamente puniti (Luca 10:18; Matteo 25:41; Efesini 6:11, 12).

La Salvezza
Crediamo che soltando il ravvedimento e la fede nel prezioso sangue di Cristo, unico sommo sacerdote, siano indispensabili per la purificazione dal peccato di chiunque lo accetta come personale Salvatore e Signore (Romani 3:22-25; Atti 2:38; I Pietro 1:18, 19; Efesini 2:8).

La Rigenerazione
Crediamo che la rigenerazione (nuova nascita) per opera dello Spirito Santo è assolutamente essenziale per la salvezza (Giovanni 1:12, 13; 3:3; I Pietro 1:23; Tito 3:5).

La Guarigione Divina
Crediamo alla guarigione divina, secondo le Sacre Scritture: mediante la preghiera, l'unzione dell'olio e l'imposizione delle mani (Isaia 53:4, 5; Matteo 8:16, 17; I Pietro 2:24; Marco 16:17, 18; Giacomo 5:14-16).

Il Battesimo nello Spirito Santo
Crediamo al battesimo nello Spirito Santo, come esperienza susseguente a quella della nuova nascita, che si manifesta, secondo le scritture, con il segno iniziale del parlare in altre lingue e, praticamente, con una vita di progressiva santificazione, nell'ubbidienza a tutta la verità delle Sacre Scritture, nella potenza dell'annuncio di 'tutto l'evangelo' al mondo (Atti 2:4; 2:42-46; 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9; 19:2-6; Marco 16:20; Giovanni 16:13; Matteo 28:19, 20).

I Carismi e le grazie dello Spirito Santo
Crediamo ai carismi e alle grazie dello Spirito Santo nella vita dei cristiani che, nell'esercizio del sacerdozio universale dei credenti, si manifestano per l'edificazione, l'esortazione e la consolazione della comunità cristiana e, conseguentemente, della società umana (I cCorinzi 12:4-11; Galati 5:22; Ebrei 13:15; Romani 12:1).

I Ministeri del Signore glorificato
Crediamo ai Ministeri del Signore glorificato, quali strumenti autorevoli di guida, d'insegnamento, di edificazione e di servizio nella comunità cristiana, rifuggendo da qualsiasi forma gerarchica (Efesini 1:22, 23; 4:11-13; 5:23; Colossesi 1:18).

Validità del Primo Concilio Cristiano
Crediamo all'attualità e alla validità delle deliberazioni del concilio di gerusalemme riportate in Atti 15:28, 29; 16:4.

La risurrezione
Crediamo alla risurrezione dei morti, alla condanna dei reprobi e alla glorificazione dei redenti, i quali hanno perseverato nella fede fino alla fine (Atti 24:15; Matteo 25:46; 24:12, 13).

Il Battesimo
Celebriamo il Battesimo in acqua per immersione, nel nome del Padre e del Figlio e dello Spirito Santo, per coloro che fanno professione della propria fede nel Signore Gesù Cristo come loro personale Salvatore (Matteo 28:18, 19; Atti 2:38; 8:12).

La cena del Signore
Celebriamo la cena del Signore o Santa cena, sotto le due specie del pane e del vino, rammemorando così la morte del Signore ed annunziandone il ritorno, amministrata a chiunque sia stato battezzato secondo le regole dell'evangelo e vive una vita degna e santa davanti a Dio e alla società (I Corinzi 11:26-29; Luca 22:19).

Dios danos socorro contra el enemigo.

"Danos socorro contra el enemigo para salir, pues vano es el auxilio del hombre En Dios haremos proezas, y él hollará a nuestros enemigos." (Salmo 60:11-12)

DONDE NO ESPERANDO 

Cook, un explorador que vivió a finales del siglo XVIII, dijo, hablando del Polo Sur ", esta tierra nunca será tocado por el pie humano." En cuanto a los altos picos de los hombres del planeta han convencido a sí mismos como objetivos inalcanzables. Hoy podemos decir que no hay un área de nuestro planeta que no ha sido alcanzado y explorado. Pocos años después de la declaración de Cook, se alcanzó el Polo Sur y explorar. El 29 de mayo de 1953, a las 11:30 horas, dos hombres, Iillary y Norgay alcanzaron la cumbre más alta del mundo, la del monte Everest. El mismo progreso que estamos llamados a realizar en el ámbito espiritual, estamos llamados a no conformarse con el "territorio de gracia" que hemos logrado. Hay zonas que parecen inaccesibles y picos que parecen inalcanzables, pero hay que recordar, a nosotros mismos ya los demás, que con Dios no podemos hacer lo que de otro modo sería imposible. El Señor está listo para impresionar a los hombres que por la fe que puso en sus manos lo que lleva a lograr los objetivos inesperado. It 's sigue siendo cierto que los que creen que se dan cuenta de que con Dios son hazañas logradas y alcanzan alturas y territorios que parecían inalcanzables antes de que él lo conocía. Hoy, Jesús está cerca del corazón más desesperada y tiene como objetivo ayudar, sus palabras son una invitación a la confianza. "¿Qué quieres que haga?" es la pregunta que surge, abramos nuestros corazones y encontramos que con él podemos lograr lo que nos pareció que no podíamos antes, y no podemos llegar a donde esperábamos.
